My kids just LOVE countdown calendars!  "How many more days until..." -- it's always so much easier to wait if you have something fun to do :-)

So, a few years ago, we created a countdown calendar for Halloween.

halloween-garland

The calendar was created from small canvas bags that we purchased at our local crafts store.  They were 6/$1, so it wasn't that expensive.

We decorated each bag using foam stickers, scrapbook stickers, pre-painted wood signs or with hand-drawn pictures.  Make sure to label each bag with a number for the day on the month (from 1 thru 31) -- this was a HUGE timesaver as I could easily fill all the bags on the weekend and just grab the one I needed each day.

If you begin in September, you can make one or two bags each day and be ready for October 1st!

Hand-drawn ghost with glitter-sticker face -- drawing a jack-o-lantern is great too!

Glue on pre-painted wood decorations.

Fun glitter foam stickers that kids love to use!

 How to Use the Calendar:

1.  You can leave individual bags at the breakfast table each morning.

OR

2.  String them all on a piece of ribbon and hang them on your mantle, doorway or staircase.

What Do We Put in Each Bag?

Fun activities we can do as a family!!

We love fall so this ends up being easy.  I've also been known to sneek in a few pieces of candy corn :-)

Here are some ideas we include on slips of paper placed in each bag:

  • Visit a pumpkin patch to choose your pumpkins
  • Decorate the house for fall
  • Choose which costume to wear for trick-or-treat
  • 'Ghost' a friend in the neighborhood
  • Read a Halloween book together (I usually fill 5 or 6 bags with different book titles).  Here are a few of our favorites:

More Ideas for Activities:

  • Make a fun craft
  • Make a new fall recipe together
  • Go on a leaf hunt or fall nature walk
  • Head to the store to buy candy for trick-or-treaters
  • Carve our jack-o-lanterns
  • 'Spookify' the front door for trick-or-treaters
  • Family movie night -- try one of these:

It's a great fall craft for the kids, and a fun way to wait out the days until one of their favorite holidays!!

This is such a great idea! I love finding ways to add a little excitement to the holidays ~ especially the "smaller" ones. I cannot wait to put our countdown together. My little guy will love it...thanks for sharing!

What a wonderful idea. Not used to doing a countdown for Halloween, but why not? Vicky fromwww.messforless.net

Hi Vicky - the calendar was one of those 'why not' ideas in our house too. My kids asked why there weren't countdown calendars for all the holidays one year, so we started this one that fall (kids are so smart!).

Countdowns are a great way to build up excitement about something or help kids wait. For my son, we always have countdowns and waiting excitement for grandma's next visit, so maybe we could do something special for that the next time she is going to come.

I love that Jennifer! I agree, sometimes kids need a fun way to pass the days - and for a grandparents visit, what a great time to use a countdown - I'm making a note to do that later this year when our grandparents are scheduled to visit :D

What a fun tradition to create with your family, and I like that you added in the idea of making your countdown a craft.

Hi Tricia - I think my favorite part of the calendar is the activities we do (some of which I keep a surprise until the kids open the bag that day)!

I must admit, we are not big Halloween people around here... but this is adorable, and a great way to do a countdown for just about anything really! I have pinned it to our Seasonal Holiday Crafts Board. Thanks for sharing!
