Christmas Minute to Win It Games for Kids and Adults

I don’t know about your house, but at my house not everyone knows all the correct lyrics to some of those tried and true Christmas songs.

Yes hubby, I’m totally looking at you 😉

So I thought we’d turn a few of those songs into a friendly competition among family members with our newest FREE printable Christmas game! Similar to our What’s in the Stocking? Minute to Win It Game this is quick, easy & great for all ages.

Whether you use this as a family game or just a fun activity for kids to do over their holiday breaks, it’s a great way to enjoy some time together (and even practice the words to those favorite holiday tunes too 😉

How to Play “What’s the Lyrics?” Minute to Win It Game

This is a super easy game to set up and play!

And we’ve even added a few ‘challenge’ levels if you want to make it a little harder or get kids up and moving.

Setting up the Game:

  • Print off a copy of the FREE Here We Go A Caroling song words (you’ll find them at the bottom of this post!)  You’ll see there are 2 sets of cards – one that includes reindeer names (for Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer) and the other for the 12 Days of Christmas
  • For younger kids, use only the reindeer cards OR the ornament cards – one set at a time. For older kids & adults, mix both sets together.
  • Turn all cards face down or place them in a stocking or Santa hat!  We put our cards in a cute reindeer bag that I had on hand.  The important thing is that no one should see the words on the cards before the timer begins.

The basic rules of the game:

  • Tell each player they will need to put the cards in order of each song. Hint: players might want to sing “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” and “The 12 Days of Christ-mas” while they take their turn.
  • Set a timer for 1 minute. NO other players should be watching (or they will havean unfair advantage 🙂
  • Start the timer when the player chooses the first card. Each player has 1 minute to get all the cards in the correct order.
  • When the timer goes off, or when the player thinks they are done, take a photo of the cards laid out on the table. Then place them all upside down or back inthe stocking/Santa hat for the next player.
  • Players get 1 point for each card that is in the correct spot!

Want to make it a get-up-and-move game??

Instead of putting the cards into a stocking, clip them to your Christmas tree or hang them on a ribbon across your mantle.  Then have players run to get the cards collected and carry them back to the table before putting them in order.

And if you want to make this a REALLY challenging game, play some Christmas carols that are NOT one of the songs in the game!  It’s quite hard to keep your thoughts focused on the game words when you have a different song playing in the background 😉

Fun Minute to Win It Song Lyrics Game for Christmas

Here’s what usually happens when folks get  started with this game.

First, they scoff and say “of course I know the lyrics!”

Then they flip over all the cards and realize that there’s not really any pattern to them — plus the 12 Days cards do NOT have the number of each item in front of the word.

Next, people will start with the reindeer cards — because there’s fewer of those.

They will probably do some humming or singing starting with “Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, had a very shiny nose …” and then after a verse or two, realize that the reindeer names come BEFORE the first line of the song (ha!)

Most adults get caught up when they get to Blitzen/Vixen (unless they are die-hard Christmas fans like you & I 🙂

When you move on to the 12 Days of Christmas cards, players will quickly realize there are a LOT of birds in this game.  And without the numbers in front of each birds’ name, it’s kind of hard to remember who flies before who, right?!

Plus all those people dancing and playing and leaping — it can really mix people up.

But it’s really a TON of fun for everyone!

Younger kids may have been listening to carols or singing them in music class recently and have an advantage on their older relatives.  Adults can sit for this game (in fact, you can play it in pairs too especially if you use the option to hang the game cards on the tree – have kids run to grab the cards while their older partners try to get them in order).

And another big plus — you can also use the 12 Days of Christmas cards to play charades or pictionary too!  It’s like a 2-for-1 game night 🙂
