Using Math to Create the Star Wars Galaxy {with free printable!}

With May the Fourth (be with you!) coming next week, we're teaming up with some geeky blogging friends to share Star Wars activities for everyone!

In addition to being Star Wars fans, we also love cool STEM activities that are related to our favorite movies .

And that's exactly what I told my daughter --

Me:  "Hey, do you want to do a cool Star Wars activity?"

Kid:  "YES!"  She's a fan girl.

Me:  "Ok, grab the calculator and meet me outside."

Kid:  "Yea!  Hey wait, does that mean you're trying to trick me into doing some math?"

Ah, the force is strong in this one :)

Tips for Helping Kids Meet New Friends

Do you know how every kid has some special talent -- a skill that just makes you go "Wow!  Where did they learn that?!"

It's that thing about your child that impresses you, makes you proud and causes you to stop and think how it will help them in life.

For my daughter, her amazing talent is meeting new people.

She's always the first one to volunteer to sit next to the new student at school.  And every year she goes to a summer camp, she'll come home on the first day and tell us about her new friend.  Granted, sometimes she doesn't know this 'new friend's' name ;) but she's always knows something about them and is excited to see them the next day.

When we saw the trailer for the NEW Peanuts movie that's out in theaters, I was reminded that meeting new people doesn't come naturally for everyone.  As Charlie Brown finds out (and some of us have experienced), meeting people can be a little awkward whether you're the new person at school or the one who wants to welcome a new neighbor.

But my daughter has shared with me that there are some super easy ways to meet new people and help kids to begin those new friendships that could last a lifetime!

12 Inspiring Science Movies for Kids

Movies about science & inventors is the focus of this week's Summer Movie Series for Kids!

There are a number of wonderful films that will inspire children to tinker and create new things -- kids always come up with the most amazing ideas when given the chance ;)

For example, my daughter wants a robot that will do all her chores (wouldn't we all love one of those!)

In addition to some very creative inventions, these movies also offer a peek into the process of trial & error.

No one gets it right on the first try -- being an inventor is all about not giving up which is a great message and important life skill for kids to understand.

So pop some popcorn and turn down the lights -- reminding the kids that both of those things were created by some awesome tinkerers!

Then offer the kids the opportunity to do some inventing of their own with some of the hands-on tinkering activities we've also featured in the post -- here's to a creative summer!

9 Totally NOT Boring History Movies for Kids

Inspire kids to learn about the past with these great history movies that are perfect to us in the classroom or at home!

Welcome back to the 2nd part of our Summer Movies for Kids series!

Last week, we featured outstanding kids books that were made into movies -- this week, we're focusing on movies that make history FUN!

When I was younger, I would complain to my Grandmother about my history homework all the time!

I hated memorizing all those dates.

I never understood why we had to know what happened in the past.

It was all so boring to me.

But there was a method to my madness -- you see, my Grandmother LOVED history!

When I started complaining, she would tell me super interesting stories about the topic -- things they never taught in the classroom.  I was instantly intrigued and wanted to know more.

And I quickly learned THAT was the key -- find a way to make learning about the past interesting!

25 Best Children's Books Made into Movies

A list of favorite children's books made into movies -- perfect for family movie nights!

This week we are beginning our Summer Movies for Kids series!

I know you're looking at the calendar right about now thinking "What?  Summer can't be here already!"

It always sneaks up on us too -- in fact, our kids only have 19 more days of school left until they are officially on summer break (that countdown gives me a bigger jolt that my 2nd cup of coffee on these mornings ;)

One of the resources we have on the website is a master list of kids books that have been made into movies --  more than 100 titles!

I've often used (and recommended) the technique of pairing reading with a movie during the summer -- an incentive to get kids to pick up a book and also (once they've seen the movie) have a great discussion about which they enjoyed more.

But I know a list of 100 can get overwhelming and with limited time over the summer, you really want to offer kids books & movies that are engaging so they'll want to read more.

So we've narrowed down the list to our top 25 book/movie combos that are perfect for summertime!

Make Your Own Tinker Box & Build Robots {STEM Project for Kids}

My kids love to learn how things work!

You will frequently find them taking things apart or weilding a screwdriver to help Dad with projects around the house.

And yes, we have had our own share of mishaps as a result of their explorations -- but we've learned that those broken items are just a part of life when you're raising curious kids.

In order to give them the opportunity to 'tinker' and explore, we've offered the kids a variety of ways to get hands-on as they build, explore and create new inventions.

One of their favorites is to have their own Tinker Box -- an activity that offers them the opportunity to use tools, learn how things work and engineer to their hearts content!

Here are the details so you can pull together you're own Tinker Box at home along with affiliate links for some of the items that will be helpful as you do!

23 Must See Movies Before Your Visit to Walt Disney World

Put a few of these must-see Disney movies on your list for family movie night before your next trip to Disney World!

Is a visit to Walt Disney World in your future?

Lucky you!

My parents have retired in Florida so we have been blessed to visit the parks a few times.

The first time we climbed into the Swiss Family Robinson's treehouse and sailed the raft to Tom Sawyer's Island, my kids were confused.  They hadn't seen either of the movies and once I explained they were 'live action', the kids were surprised to know there were non-animated Disney movies!

Our family movie nights expanded to include some of the older, non-animated features that I enjoyed as a child and quickly became family favorites.

So before you head off to enjoy 'the happiest place on Earth', there are a few must-see Disney movies (along with some non-Disney movies) that will help to enhance your visit to the parks!
